Big-O समय नहीं, बढ़त का ढंग बताता है: O(n) में काम input के साथ क़दम मिलाकर बढ़ता है, O(n²) में उसके वर्ग के साथ। Curves दिखाते हैं कि input बड़ा होने पर ये ढंग कितने अलग तरीक़े से चढ़ते हैं। सख़्ती से कहें तो Big-O उस बढ़त की ऊपरी सीमा बताता है। O का मतलब Ordnung है, German में “order”: यह notation Paul Bachmann (1894) से आया और Edmund Landau ने इसे फैलाया।
